The Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University, first of its kind in the entire North East and fourteenth amongst the Open universities in India was established by the Assam Legislative Assembly by an Act (XXXVII of 2005) in 1995. The Act received the assent from the Governor on 7th September, 2005.
